Teach Your Dog to Heel with a Harness

By Allyson Westcot

If you would like to teach your dog no to pull ahead when you walk, it's going to take a large amount of practice and patience. You can make the training easier on you both by utilizing the right dog leash and harness. Many individuals just utilise a regular collar and a plain leash to teach their dogs. Although it can be done this way, better tools can make the method faster.

Harnesses designed with a chest plate are commonly used to discourage pulling. While the harness itself won't straight away stop a dog from pulling, it changes the dynamic when the dog tries it. Rather than feeling the pull round the neck with a collar or in a strap across the front of the chest, the chest plate helps spread the force of the pulling out more evenly.

This kind of harness can give you much more control over your dog's actions. When you are trying to get your dog to walk with you instead of pulling ahead, a secret is to not let the dog pull in any way. When you have more control, you can more simply pull your dog back and keep him there without tension on you or your dog.

When you're faced with a dog that pulls, not only does it make walks more nerve-wrangling, it can hurt your shoulder, back and arm. This is especially true when the dog is large. Trying a leash with some give can help put the brakes on these problems. You can get this kind of leash in different sizes, to permit smaller dogs or enormous dogs that don't pull much some more slack, and to keep dogs you are working with or hard-pullers close by your side.

These kinds of dog accessories can help you teach your dog to heel and walk on a loose leash. This is a great first step in keeping your dog from running and bolting away from you.
