Walking your pet is obviously the most basic use for a leash. A good multi-purpose leash should let you select between different lengths. This allows you to switch between a shorter leash for training or smaller dogs, and a longer leash for bigger dogs or those that like a bit more slack. This is also regarded as a great choice for folks with two or more dogs of different sizes or temperaments who don't get walked simultaneously.

The ability to walk your dog hands-free is great if you want to carry things, of if you would like to be able to jog and move your arms easily. A good multi-purpose leash should easily snap into place over your shoulder and around your body for easy, hands-free walking or running.
