How to register a dog

By Jerry Welsh

Registering the dog entirely depends on the choice of the dog owners as registering the dog with a kennel club is not mandatory. Registering or not registering the dog will not make a difference to the enjoyment, companionship and entertainment you will have for choosing to have a dog for a pet.

A kennel club registration certificate will not be important for a dog as this pet will remain affectionate and loyal to the family even if it is not registered. However, you may decide to breed your dog someday to have little she dogs and he dogs that looked just like your beloved pet. Registering the dog to a kennel club would qualify the pet to be mated with another purebred. When a puppy is purchased the breeder should provide the new dog owner with a Dog Application Registration form as this will be needed in case the owner decides to register the dog.

Dog registration is not obligatory but breeders of purebred dogs have to register the dogs. Owners of companions dogs would not think of registering the pet. Registering the pet would give an owner benefits. Dog owners are certainly proud of the achievements of the pet. A dog owner would brag about the rosettes and blue ribbons awarded to the pet and of course for a dog to enter kennel club events registration would be necessary.

The dog can be registered in two of the major kennel clubs - the United Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club. Registering the dog and paying the required registration fee would be easy as long as the requirements specified by the kennel club are met. One of the requirement of the American Kennel Club is a verified parentage for three generations. Aside from having a registered sire and dam, the litter must be registered by the breeder as well.

A Dog Registration Application filled up with all the vital registration information must be provided by the breeder when the puppy was purchased. To register the dog an owner can accomplish an online form or complete a paper copy. The name of the dog, the gender, the color and markings, the signatures of the owners of the rest of the litter as well as the name, address and signature of the owner of the dog being registered must be supplied. After the form is submitted and the registration fee paid, it normally takes several months before you can receive the registration certificate that will be mailed by the kennel club.
