Gear for Your Active Dog

By Allyson Westcot

Letting your dog come along and enjoy your active way of living can be fun for the two of you. It takes a little bit of planning and even some special gear, but you and your dog can be prepared and ready for the great outdoors in almost no time. If you will be spending some considerable time outside, you might even hike or walk in areas where your dog can go off-leash for some time. The best gear for this type of activity is a dog harness paired with a leash and a dog backpack.

Since you will doubtless need food, water and other things, also, this is a lot to carry. But with a great backpack, your dog can carry her items while you carry yours. Not only does this offer your pet some more exercise, it can often help her stay focused on what she's doing and make her less likely to become distracted and try running or pull against her leash.

Don't weigh your dog down with items, but adding some to a backpack could be a good idea. Try letting your dog wear the empty pack at first, since she'd take time to start liking the idea of having the additional bulk on her back.

Carrying water along on walks is crucial, but who wants to carry a bulky dog bowl? Feeding and watering your dog calls for one, however. A folding dog bowl is the ideal solution. These bowls fold flat and can attach to a dog harness, collar, leash or belt with the built in snap-hook.

You can put it in your dog's backpack or your pack to carry along. You simply unfold the bowl inside out to pour your dog water and/or food. The material dries swiftly, so that you can fold it back up and be on your way in almost no time.
