By Geraldine Dimarco

Who doesn't want a happy, slipper fetching dog greet them when they get home at the end of the day? It's something most people would want to experience, but it very seldom comes to pass. Why? What do you think is the reason why people feel that canine training is more challenging than it actually is? Sure we can call one of those canine obedience schools, but you don't need them once you know the basics of dog training.

Why is that? Why do we sometimes feel like training our pet is a huge undertaking we are not always up to? Sure there are dog obedience training schools out there, but why spend so much money when we can do it ourselves?

There are so many helpful dog training DVD and literature you can use to help you mold your pet into the next Lassie. Search engines will lead you to reliable pet websites that will give you tips and useful information on the secrets of happy pet owners and other experts on the field. Here are some dog training tips that are simple enough for anybody to use.

Dog crate training is one of the first things you will need to teach your pet. What is crate training? It is teaching the animal to go to his own space, his crate, as his personal spot away from stress. This is particularly useful when you decide to travel. You can just tuck him safely inside his crate and he will be happily wiling away the time with his toys, without causing damage to things and people.

The great thing about dog crate training is that it is actually potty training your pet as well. Remember, as much as possible canines will not eliminate in the place they settle in.

What is practical with dog crate training is that it is also helping him to become potty trained as well. Remember, canines do not like eliminating in the area they stay in. Therefore if they are crate trained, they will hold in their urge to do their business until you can bring them outside their crate and outside your home. Imagine the convenience it will bring you; not to mention the reduction of all your cleaning costs.

Socialization is another important aspect of dog training. Without it, you might run into the danger of having your dog grow up to be domineering and overly aggressive. Introduce him to people and other healthy dogs early on. When he is comfortable with people, he will probably be a happy and friendly dog when he gets older. Be firm but always kind; do not compromise your status as his leader, but never be harsh in your treatment of him.

Dogs find meaning in their simple life when they please their master so build on that. Enjoy this time with him and watch him grow to be the dog you've always wanted.
