So What Can I Give My Dog for Pain?

By Geraldine Dimarco

Do you have a pet who is currently suffering from a pain of some sort? You might be at home thinking, what can I give my dog for pain? It really is a difficult thing to see and you want to know what you can give that will be effective, yet safe for him. It's a good thing you stopped by then. Here are great tips on dog pain relievers that will help you do just that.

You need to know that human medications are bad for animals. Never administer even the mildest pain relief drug to them as most of them contain substances that are too strong for the canine's system. People sometimes give a small dosage of Aspirin or Tylenol to their pets for a minor pain but I strongly advise you against it. It may aggravate your dog's condition-especially if he has a pre-existing medical condition of some sort already.

What is it that your dog is sick from? You need to know what it is so you can appropriate the correct treatment for him. Many times, dogs suffer discomfort because of arthritis. Arthritis is commonly caused by old age but there are cases wherein a young pup contracted this because of an injury or disease.

If arthritis is the culprit, then you would do well in managing your dog's diet and exercise. Calorie intake is critical because overweight dogs further worsen his arthritic condition. The additional stress on his joints makes for very painful movements and lifestyle. Provide him with fresh food all the time and engage him in a light, exercise regimen that will be gentle on his joints.

The vet usually prescribes a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug to lessen the pain the animal is suffering from. Zubrin, Novox, Rimadyl and Etogesic are just some examples of NSAIDs that are given to animals in pain. Sometimes, narcotics and steroids are administered, but only for extreme cases. Any drug should never be given without the vet's consent but especially the stronger ones that can potentially cause serious health problems.

There are a lot of natural and holistic therapies that you can use to alleviate the suffering of your dog. Natural products are safer because they contain curative properties extracted in herbs. When you use them consistently, you will see an improvement over time. You can find great products on pet-care sites online.

For immediate relief, give your dog a gentle massage to release tension. A warm compress will also help in this. If your dog is experiencing discomfort due to inflammation, apply an ice pack over the affected area for 20 minutes every so often for the next 48 hours. It should improve significantly by then.

Now you have all these great tips on dog pain relievers. When somebody asks you, what can I give my dog for pain-you know. Do the best you can and love your dog the way he deserves to be-enjoy a happy and pain-free pet today!
