Facts About Pig Farm Waste & Waste

By Lianne Derocco

There are many concerns about agricultural waste from hog farms and other types of livestock farms, such as dairy farms. It is no secret that this waste does contain harmful toxins and if these are released in large amounts, they can harm livestock, wildlife and, of course, nearby humans, as well.

There are many different toxins present in swine waste, among the most common you might encounter are different types of gases, such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, methane and, of course, carbon dioxide. Each of these can pose as a serious health risk, for example the gas of hydrogen sulfide has been shown to cause flu-like reactions in humans, as well as brain damage.

The situations are certainly by no means hopeless, as there are waste management solutions that will limit the effects of these gases and toxins. Farm operators can follow waste protocol to ensure that leaks do not occur and toxins do not seep into the groundwater. Proper ventilation is another important part of the solution. Treating the waste throughout the year is another way to keep waste problems from occurring. Several products are available that not only treat the waste but improve the quality of nutrients within the waste, which makes it a much better type of fertilizer.

Waste treatment certainly doesn't have to be a challenging or even a costly endeavor, and there are natural options for swine waste management that do not add any chemicals to an already toxic mix. These products use a blend of helpful bacteria as a waste digester, reducing and liquefying sludge and making it easy to irrigate and agitate waste.

The Agra Sphere, which comes in a variety for deep pit systems as well as one for waste lagoons are biodegradable and easy to use. You toss in an adequate amount of spheres to accommodate the number of gallons in your waste systems. The spheres then sink to the bottom and immediately begin attacking the sludge layer and as the bacteria releases from the sphere it begins to grow and work faster.

In addition, using the Agra Spheres is a great way to reduce the odors and flies so prevalent around swine waste systems. In addition to reducing sludge, odors and insects, this product also prevents crusting on the top level of your waste. There is nothing harmful in the product, and it is safe for people, animals and even plants.
