Basic Facts Regarding Cockapoo Puppies

By Brandi Little

Cockapoo puppies are known as a crossbreed or mixed breed. These animals are a mix of the Poodle, usually not miniature or toy, and the English or American Cocker Spaniel. Many purebred associations do not recognize this animal, or other mixed breeds, a breed. Owners should be well informed about these dogs.

This kind of animal has been around in America since the 1950s. The earliest reference to these dogs came in a dictionary published during the 1960s. In some cases, such dogs may be a mix of Cocker Spaniel and Cockapoo or Cockapoo and Poodle. Puppies of this sort are then 75 percent Poodle or Spaniel.

Generally, these animals are considered to be healthy. There are not many health issues associated with the breed. However, like many small dogs, they do tend to live 15 years or longer. Both Spaniels and Poodles tend to suffer with a condition called luxating patellas, or loose knees. This problem can be passed to offspring. Therefore, it is recommended that owners have the puppies checked for this problem.

Similarly, Spaniels and Poodles are more prone to eye disorders, specifically PRA or progressive retinal atrophy. Before any breeding is done, animals should be tested to ensure that they do not have PRA. Cockapoos, like several other breeds, have floppy ears. This makes them more likely to develop infections of the ear. It is important to keep the ears clean and dry at all times.

Typically they have a white, tan or cream color. They usually weigh between five and twenty pounds. While they are young, it will be difficult to know what exactly the dog will grow to look like. Some tend to take on more Spaniel characteristics and others have more features of the Poodle. Since these are not purebred dogs, they do not have any defined traits. As pups and adults, these dogs are popular pets. They are known to have loving, active, intelligent and outgoing personalities.

This breed is relatively low maintenance and easy to take care of. They do not produce a lot of dander and are not known to shed a lot. The dogs may take qualities from their mother or father breed. Most of them are small in size as pups and may not grow much, even as they approach adulthood.

It is suggested that owners have a large yard for the animal to play in. These dogs are known to be active and need adequate space. Regular exercise is essential because the breed is known for overeating. If not regulated, weight issues can arise. Cockapoos are considered ideal dogs for families.

Cockapoo puppies are known for being low maintenance, relatively healthy, fun and friendly animals that make good pets for households. This animal is a mix of the Cocker Spaniel, English or American, and the Poodle. Which of the breeds the dogs take after will range, but generally they are small framed, and have cream, white or tan fur. The coat may be spotted, freckled or solid. Although quite popular, these animals are not recognized as breeds by most dog associations.
