Understanding The Many Learning Disorders Mississauga

By Erna Gutierrez

There is a lot of help available for children with learning disorders Mississauga. An early diagnosis is the key to helping a student achieve academic success. There are many excellent programs that have helped countless thousands of students overcome their problems, however serious they may be.

As soon as parents or educators suspect a learning problem they should schedule the child for a thorough evaluation. This should include all factors even speech and listening skills. Many problems are very subtle and difficult to diagnose accurately. They often require the skills of an advanced practitioner who has many years of experience.

Dyslexia is one of the most common problems facing students. It often presents with very distinctive symptoms early in life. Even as early as pre school or kindergarten the child may have problems recognizing or remembering letters and their sounds. They may be slow to learn other skills such as math and writing too. The sooner the problem is diagnosed the better.

There are some excellent programs that will help a dyslexic child learn to read. The are phonics based and literally break the words down into their smallest chunks. The child can then learn to systematically recognize each sound and then piece them together to read words. It will take a lot of work by the child, their family and the school, but they will be able to learn to read. After using one of these programs many children actually go on to be very strong readers.

Fortunately there are some very effective programs that can help people with dyslexia. They often need to be provided on an individual basis and more ahead as quickly or slowly as the individual student needs. The programs are very systematic and teach the student to recognize parts of words and sounds step by step. As they progress they learn to put the sounds together and recognize whole words.

Attention deficit disorders can be very difficult for a child to deal with. They are constantly unfocused and cannot settle down to work. This means they are constantly missing what the teacher says and are often disrupting the rest of the class. Teachers can quickly become very exasperated with these students and even the other students become annoyed.

Working memory problems can be a serious for students and make every type of learning a struggle. If the information cannot get from short term memory to long term memory the child will not be able to learn at the same pace as their peers. There are a number of strategies and skills that can help. Teaching the student to link a word or concept to something they already know can be very effective. They must move forward in a very systematic way at their own pace.

There are a host of ways that students with learning disorders Mississauga can get help. Everyone involved should approach the situation as a team working together. The student should be included as their cooperation is critical to success.
