5 Kennel Cough Vaccine Side Effects You Need To Know About

By Jeff Kappel

Like the human cold or flu virus, it is known that kennel cough lacks treatment. The most highly recommended method to prevent this illness is through the use of different kennel cough vaccines and home remedies.

Kennel cough can likely be prepared to what we as humans experience as the common cold. A vaccine, just like for the flu, can never completely eradicate the colds or influenza viruses in us as humans, and the same is to be said for kennel cough vaccines. The top 5 most widely spread side effects from a kennel cough vaccine will include things like very pale gums, excessive vomiting, dangerous and scary seizures, diarrhea and your dog seeing a rapid increase in heart rate. These are all things that you should consider when it comes down to making the decision if you want to use a vaccine or a home remedy.

However, it would be highly recommended that you do consult with your vet as a pet owner before you make the decision to deny or accept the kennel cough vaccine or any vaccine for your pet. There is an entire set of guidelines put in place by the American Animal Hospital Association to help ensure all pet vaccinations are safe. The American Animal Hospital Association does advise taking a thorough look at the medical history and lifestyle of your dog. They will want to know if your dog has been in risky behaviors such as extended stays in public or private kennels. If that is the case it's more than likely your vet will want to administer the vaccine for kennel cough.

There are other high risk behaviors or lifestyles for kennel cough that dog owners will want to take note of. They include things like dogs with a history of respiratory problems, senior dogs (older dogs), hospitalized pets, show dogs, dogs who spend large amount of time around other pets, dogs who attend different boarding facilities (doggie day care, etc), dogs who live in a kennel or confined space within their home.

Please, if your dogs fits into any of these guidelines make sure to consult with your veterinarian about whether or not they feel it's important to administer the kennel cough vaccine or using a homeopathic remedy.

A couple different options as kennel cough vaccines that are readily available from pretty much anywhere are the use of intranasal sprays and injections. You'll see more success with injections for older pets and the sprays work best for first time use or on puppies that have kennel cough. These types of vaccines prove most effective for dogs who spend vast amounts of time around other dogs. Since this type of vaccination is so inexpensive it has the ability to be mutually beneficial for treating large groups of dogs very quickly without hurting the pocket book.

The big question still remains, are these vaccination methods effective in eradicating kennel cough? While that decision is still up for debate, most dog owners will do whatever it takes to ensure the long health and safety of their beloved family pet. With this in mind, if you are still concerned about kennel cough vaccines, we would recommend following up with your vet for additional information.
