By Bertha Wells

Flea drops for cats are usually put on in order to keep itching and scratching at bay. When it is applied, it kills those pests that may already be present and deters new ones from jumping on. When a pet suffers form a serious infestation, you have to use another method of treatment. Vets can tell you exactly what to do in this case and help you keep your feline companion healthy.

Fleas are small insects. They do not have any wings and move from pet to pet by jumping. When they land, they bite the skin and suck blood. They can cause allergic dermatitis, in which case the feline keeps scratching long after the parasites are dead or have gone. This form of eczema is usually marked by red pimples on the tail and legs. These areas are where the pests usually stay and cause irritation.

That is what often happens when a pet continues to feel uncomfortable long after a liquid treatment has been used on their coat. The parasites are killed but the harmful effect they have continues. They have set an allergic response in motion that must be dealt with in other ways. A vet will diagnose the condition and recommend treatment to ease the discomfort.

When fleas are still on your pet, you can usually detect their presence fairly easily. They leave droppings which look like dried blood. If you run your hands through the hair on the back of a cat, you are likely to find these markers there if the parasites are around. You may also see your cat scratching a lot or displaying other signs of discomfort. White gritty specks in the hair are another sign. These are flea eggs and should be destroyed before they hatch.

Flea drops for cats are applied to the lower neck, right in between the shoulders. This position provides maximum exposure to the insects, since many of them always gather there. It is also a focal area on the body and the liquid easily disperses from there to other parts, including the legs and tail. It remains on the skin and kills the pests and you do not need to do anything extra.

There are several spot on products which are carried by both clinics and online retailers. In the past, there was less variety but as time went on, more manufacturers got involved in the industry. The active ingredients that work in each one vary and your doctors can explain more if you have questions about a particular type.

If you have both dogs and felines living with you, you should not mix their treatments unless advised to do so by a doctor. Medications that are safe for a canine can be harmful to a cat and vice versa. Always seek recommendations from your animal doctor before you give a pet drugs.

Seeing your pet grumpy and itchy may have caused you tot take action. However you have other things to be concerned about as well. Tapeworms are dangerous parasites that are transmitted by these insects. They can cause weight loss as well as other serious health concerns.
