By Janelle Burnett

The presence of bed bugs is a disturbing issue in many households. These tiny insects leave marks on bed sheets, walls or furniture in their wake. This is a very embarrassing spectacle for guests to behold. They also bite children and make them scratch the inflamed areas making the bites susceptible to secondary infection. Consequently, many are searching for means of how to exterminate bed bugs.

To begin with, a distinction should be made between stings inflicted by bugs and other creatures. It is a fact that they survive on warm blood sucked from animals. They crawl out of their habitat and attack humans at night. However, their stings go unnoticed since their saliva has a pain killing effect. As a result, they feast on their victims and the only sign of their presence is marks of clot blood.

Bed bugs are a common occurrence in all parts of world. These insects make their habitat in cracks, cushions, mattresses or on furniture or carpets. This means they can migrate with baggage, clothes, luggage, anything and everything without being noticed from one place to another. They have the capacity to hibernate for a year without feeding waiting for their next prey.

It is important to embark on eradicating microbes the moment their presence is noticed in the home. Several pesticides may help you achieve this objective. However, these products are full of chemicals that have adverse effect on health and should be considered as last resort. To begin with, there are many natural home remedies available to get rid of these insects.

The sooner the signs of invasion are noticed the better. This will make savings in form of cost and severity of the attack. The initial measure is to identify the exact place invaded. Both proactive and preventive measures should be applied to curb the incursion at latter times. Where the severity of the attack is high, it would be well to call in experts from pest control.

For thoroughly extermination of these insects, ensure that their breeding habitats are also destroyed. Identify these habitats such as crevices or cracks in furniture, walls or other effects in the house and eliminate them. This measure to some extent will destroy mature insects as well as their larvae and eggs. For those residing in warm climates expose the items to direct sun light.

Microbes are not able to withstand heat and thus using warm water for your laundry destroys them. Thus, wash your clothes, curtains, pillow covers and blankets with warm water or using steam. This should be followed by drying in direct sunlight to ensure the items are bug free. Vacuum cleaning also helps to get rid of these parasites as it eliminates their succor.

The pesticides now available in the market are designed to exterminate bed bugs at all stages of their life cycle. They are also designed to infiltrate and destroy their habitats. Nevertheless, not all measures are effective in the same degree in controlling these creatures at all places. You will need to use more than method to achieve your objective depending on the area infested.
