Originally from Germany, this breed was first developed to hunt out rats and other vermin on farms, but today they are primarily just a family companion. Schnauzers are part of the Terrier family. To keep their coats looking their best, these dogs need to be taken for professional grooming every five to eight weeks. They should also be combed and brushed with a short wire brush daily to prevent the fur from matting. The coat will require trimming twice each year, with the upper body cut short and the lower body kept longer. The dog's whiskers should be cleaned after eating.

When training these dogs, it is essential to establish the human master's position as leader from the start or the animal may attempt to do its own thing and refuse to listen and obey its owner. This issue is termed "small dog syndrome", and it can be prevented by simply exercising firm but gentle control early on, once this is done these pups are quite adept at learning and obeying. Performing tricks, especially those with jumping is a specialty of theirs.

The Miniature Schnauzer is well-suited for living in smaller quarters such as an apartment, provided it gets sufficient exercise. A daily walk or run is needed for these energetic little dogs, but it is important that they "heel" to their masters, allowing the human to lead at all times. They also enjoy playing off the leash, games with a ball and such.

This breed is generally not especially prone to particular illnesses as some are, yet there are some disorders which have been known to occur in them and should be pointed out to potential owners of these dogs. These possible ailments include; liver disease, skin disorders, cysts, diabetes, von Willebrand's disease, bladder and kidney stones, and eye problems such as retinal dysplasia. They can also become overweight easily, so they should not be overfed. Most Miniature Schnauzers can live to be as old as 15 years, with proper care, and most maintain a youthful look until their final years.
