Everyone needs protection from the elements during the winter months. Then there are those in between weather months in which the temperature ranges from warm to cold throughout the day. Keeping Your Horse Comfortable and Warm

Clipping - During winter time, horse's winter coats grow and become really nice and comfortable for retaining heat. When the weather changes you will be the one making the decision of clipping their coat. If you don't clip his coat, he will need additional time for grooming so mud and dirt can be removed that is gathered on a daily basis. If you don't do the clipping and still continue with the exercise routine, your horse will be at risk of developing illness. Therefore making clipping a part of daily grooming is not something you can avoid.

Blankets- If you decide to clip your horse, he will need his own type of horse clothing to keep him warm. You might have your warm horse hoodies but they also have their winter coat to wear. A high quality blanket is important. It shouldn't be too tight, as this can rub his skin raw, or so loose it shifts as he moves. Water- In the night when it gets colder, there is a chance that the water troughs might freeze. Be sure to check the horse's water several times each day to ensure it isn't frozen and to replace it if it is. The horse will need to drink 19 to 38 litres of water each day in order to stay hydrated, so making sure he has access to plenty of drinking water is essential.

Feed - If you want your horse to stay warm you should feed them fibre. It is the fibre in hay that gives the animal enough energy to produce heat within their bodies. Of course, you should speak to a veterinarian before changing your horse's diet to ensure you do so safely and gradually.

Stabling - The cold air is something the horse needs protection from and a stall can do that. But you should be sure that the comfort and warmth of the stall is something you have worked for. It is important to have enough comfortable bedding material. You need to make the stalls clean and for that you might have to wear your horse clothing every day. Also, make sure the stall is ventilated well to prevent respiratory problems from developing.
