Five of the Most Successful Racehorse Trainers in the UK

By Ruth Williams

A talented racehorse trainer can bring out any horse's potential and give him the best chance at doing well on the track. He or she also makes sure the horses are healthy, sound, and in good condition for racing. When it comes to racehorse trainers, the UK's top five include, Nigel Twiston-Davies, Ferdy Murphy, Paul Nicholls, Jonjo O'Neill, and Jenny Pitman, not necessary in that order.

Jonjo O'Neill's career began with his years as a jockey, during which he was victorious in more than 900 races. An extremely well-informed racing strategist, this racehorse trainer has found success with countless winners since 1986. Recently, Wichita Lineman won at Cheltenham. O'Neill consistently produces good results and has trained over 100 winners in a season multiple times.

National Hunt racing is among Nigel Twiston-Davies' areas of expertise. Imperial Commander is just one of over 1000 winning racehorses that he has trained since 1981. Two other horses that he trained, Bindaree and Earth Summit, both won the Grand National.

Paul Nicoholls is the trainer responsible for more than 1500 championship horses and has won the Cheltenham Gold Cup four times; he is a specialist in training horses for the National Hunt. Dating back to the start of his training in 1991, Nicholls has been awarded the British Jump Racing Champion Trainer title on four occasions. With stables in the Ditcheat,Somerset area, this gentleman has an honest and friendly demeanour.

Ferdy Murphy is another highly successful racehorse trainer who consistently trains over 60 winners in the National Hunt season. He has been successful at Cheltenham and Aintree and has trained many notable winners including Lantartique, Joes Edge, and New Alco. Murphy's home base is North Yorkshire.

In 1983, Jenny Pittman gained recognition as the first female trainer of a Grand National winner. Now retired, she spends her time attending races and writing novels that often draw on her racing expertise. She received the Order of the British Empire for her efforts in horse training, and she has since served as a role model for young women aspiring to be talented racehorse trainers.

Each trainer has deep knowledge of the horses in their care, and understands exactly which training techniques and routines will work best for each one. Their experience means they can quickly and effectively train new horses. Beginning owners shall discover that entrusting their horses to such trainers is a very wise decision.
