Why Ragdoll Cats Make Perfect Pets

By Candy Hunter

Ragdoll cats were first developed in the 1960s and are famed for their affectionate natures. They are extremely cute and have large, bright blue eyes. This breed of cat makes a great pet for anyone who is in search of a feline companion, and children in particular love to play with them.

Ann Baker, a cat breeder from the USA, developed this breed of cat after noticing that one particular feline displayed extremely docile characteristics. She breed the cat to enhance this desirable temperament. Most ragdolls tend to be larger than average domestic felines, and can reach up to 15 pounds in weight.

This cute and friendly type of cat is known as a ragdoll because it tends to go limp when it is picked up. Ragdolls love to be cuddled and like a lot of affection. Owners of this breed will find that their cat can be picked up and cuddled at virtually any time they want.

Although these cats are very good at adapting to their environment, it is important to take their needs into consideration. Like all felines, ragdolls like to explore, and they thrive in homes where there is plenty of space. People who have a garden or other type of safe outdoor environment may also want to add a cat flap to their back door so that the felines can explore independently.

It is also important to take the time to cat-proof your home. Breakable items such as glassware should be put well out of reach. Would be cat owners will also need to lock away items such as bleach, laundry soap and medication that cause your new cat harm if swallowed.

Ragdoll cats have a very playful nature and love to get into mischief whenever possible. Playing with your cat is a great way to bond with them and exercise. While there are lots of special cat toys available, these felines will play with almost anything, from pieces of string to shower curtain rings.
