A Look At Some Natural Cholesterol Control Supplements

By Arthur Goldberry

The body relies heavily on cholesterol for many tasks, including the creation of hormones, the digestion of dietary fat and constructing cell walls. Cholesterol is delivered throughout our body's tissues to be used in different ways in the same way the Big Brown Machine delivers parcels to our doorstep - in this case, Big Brown is several cholesterol-laden particles called lipoproteins. But too much of this circulating cholesterol can injure arteries, especially the coronary ones that supply the heart. When our vessels get lined with too much sticky cholesterol, this is atherosclerosis at work, a big word for a condition with less than pleasant consequences.

When blood has a difficult time flowing to the heart, the heart's muscles crave oxygen even more, which leads to angina, or chest pain. A myocardial infraction, or heart attack in any other terms may result if a blood clot totally blocks out a coronary artery affected by atherosclerosis, potentially leading to death.

Figures indicate that heart disease is the number one fatal disease in the United States for both men and women. The National Cholesterol Education Program of the American National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says that close to a hundred million American adults, or roughly close to 50 percent of all Americans, have higher blood cholesterol levels than average, a leading cause of heart disease.

Cholesterol lowering supplements containing Policosanol or Red Yeast Rice are known to assist in lowering cholesterol levels.

What is Policosanol? Policosanol is a natural supplement derived from sugar cane. It is a mixture of eight higher primary aliphatic alcohols isolated and purified from sugar cane wax. This is then broken down and purified from the sugar cane wax, thus creating a new and dynamic substance that could help anybody who is suffering from high cholesterol levels in their bloodstream. It works by helping the liver control production and breakdown of cholesterol. Policosanol promotes healthy platelet function and helps to maintain cholesterol levels that are already within the normal range.

The Benefits of Red Yeast Rice Red Yeast Rice is what happens when Monascus Purpureus grows on Oryza Sativa Linnaeus - in other words, when yeast grows on rice. Found in this supplement are Monacolins, or yeast-based substances that restrict the proliferation of cholesterol in the human body and bloodstream. Red Yeast Rice has been gaining favor with doctors and medical specialists as a mild, though not total cure for an array of digestive, blood and spleen problems.
