"Take a Bow" - How to Teach the Trick

By Dirk Gruenberg

Teaching your dog tricks can be a wonderful bonding experience and tons of fun for both the dog and the owner.

Naturally, going through the learning experience together will make you guys get even closer to each other. But not only that, your dog will, most likely, become more obedient, too.

However, you have to be patient and kind to your dog when teaching the trick. Impatience will ruin all the fun. Also, if your dog gives you signs to show that he does not enjoy the trick, just choose a different one. So, how can you actually teach a trick? That's what I will show you now: Here is how to teach the trick "Take a Bow".

First, tell your dog to be in a standing position, then, get one of his or hers favorite treat and hold the treat on the bottom of their nose.

Naturally, your dog will try to reach the treat. When your dog makes an effort to do so, move your hand to the bottom of their belly. Our dog will keep reaching for the treat and will end up with his back end in the air.

Keep the treat under their belly so that they stay in that position, and after a couple of seconds say, "Take a bow".

Do not give them the treat too fast. Have them hold the position for up to ten seconds. But also make sure that they are constantly aware of the treat. Once you are satisfied with their performance, give them the treat.

Of course, this exercise will take a lot of repetition. Again patience is key. Do not expect your dog to be able to perform the trick after only a few tries. That would not be fair to your dog, and you would only be disappointed.

And be mindful that your dog will do much better, if you have several short practice sessions rather than one long one. It will also be more fun for both of you that way.
