Teaching Your Dog the Trick "Spin"

By Dirk Gruenberg

Have you ever thought about teaching your dog a trick? If so, read on, because teaching our dogs tricks can certainly be very enjoyable.

Teaching your dog just about anything is a wonderful thing simply because it means spending quality time together. It can also strengthen your bond with your dog and even make him more obedient.

First things first: Teaching your dog tricks should be enjoyable for both of you. So you must be patient to, as to not make your dog anxious or nervous.

So, instead, simply be calm and try to enjoy the process. Also observe your dog carefully and try and get a sense whether the trick is for him. If it isn't, choose a different one.

Here's how to go about teaching the trick "Spin": First, tell your dog to face you, and then, make sure you are showing him that you have their favorite treat in your hands.

As you are holding the treat, say "spin." While you do so, move the treat close to your dog's nose, and then slowly move it in a circle. Naturally, your dog will follow the treat and make the spinning motion. Have him do this twice.

After your dog did well, of course, he needs to be rewarded. Give him the treat he so well deserves and praise him kindly.

Then move on to the next step: Show your dog the treat and say the command "spin," but this time, do not guide your dog with the treat. Encourage him to turn by himself. If he manages to do so, give him another treat. If it does not work, go back to the previous step.

So that's that. If you can come up with the patience to teach your dog this trick, you will both enjoy it and have a great time. Just do not expect too much all at once. As with any kind of dog training, it will take time and, most importantly, persistence. So keep at it.
