Having Your Puppy Come When Called: 101

By Dirk Gruenberg

Puppies are very impressionable at a young age. It is during this time that you should introduce some basic training to help them recognize you as the pack leader and to teach them your commands.

One such command is coming when called. Due to the fact that puppies are full energy, it may be hard to ask them to come to you especially when they are fixated on playing. Here are some tips on how you can train them to come when called.

After playing, your puppy surely will become hungry. This is a great time to start training your pet. Start with little dog treats and let them smell it first.

After doing so, back off a little with your dog waiting. Then give him the command to come. When he does, make sure to give him the treat.

Repeat this exercise over and over again. As you do this, start moving farther and farther away from your dog. As you practice more, also start changing the rewards. Sometimes offer praise instead of a treat.

Also be consistent when you are training your puppy. You have to make sure that you have a few minutes or even a few hours a day to train them.

This will help the "recall process" in your pet which can help make the training easier and better. They'll be able to remember the commands and the things they have to do if you are consistent.

In terms of consistency, it is important that you use the same exact command every time. Calling your dog saying, "come" on time and "this way" another time would not exactly help much. It would only cause confusion which will slow down the learning.

You also have to make sure that you introduce a command one at a time. This will give your puppy time to process it before moving on to the next training.
