How to Make Your Dog Like the Vet

By Dirk Gruenberg

Many dogs cower in fear at the sight of a veterinarian. Being probed with stethoscopes and needles can stress any dog, but the good news is there are ways to minimize a pet's anxiety when visiting the vet.

To reduce your dog's anxiety, you need to take a few simple steps to desensitize your dog. This is not too hard to do. First, the dog should get to know your vet's office without there being any painful consequences. Simply take him there once long before the actual appointment.

When visiting the vet's to purchase pet products, bring the dog along. After a few times, the dog should become accustomed to the sights and sounds of the vet's office, thus reducing his fear and anxiety.

Another thing you can do when you need to visit the vet for real is to provide your dog with his favorite toy. This will be comforting and reassuring. You can also talk to your dog in a quiet and calm voice.

In contrast, what might not be a good idea is to bring small kids along. They are often full of energy and excitement, which isn't helpful if you want your dog to be calm.

If at all possible, try to locate the source of your dog's unease. Of course, it is quite possible that the whole atmosphere is unnerving to him. In that case try to reassure him the best you can and pet him, so that he can feel your presence.

If all that does not really help, you might want to think about doing some role playing at home. You could pretend to be the doctor and simply do a routine exam on him. Just make sure to be caring and gently.

Pretend to be checking your dog's ears during the examination, and then move on to his teeth. Hold him much like your vet would.

When your dog responds positively and calmly, reward him with affection and his favorite treat. This procedure should help your dog feel more relaxed when he has to see a real vet.
