How to Stop Puppies from Chasing Cats

By Dirk Gruenberg

Puppies chase cats because of their prey instinct, not because they are aggressive. They simply see a small animal running, and their primordial instinct tells them it's time to hunt.

Of course, just because this behavior comes naturally to dogs, it does not mean that it is acceptable to us. Because of this, he should not be punished for this "misbehavior"; rather help him to behave in a more desirable way.

So how can you make your dog ignore cats or even make him get along with them? As with many issues regarding dog training, starting when the pup is very young is the key.

Begin by introducing them to each other: pet the cat and then pet the dog. Allow them to meet and greet - curiosity is natural, not only for the cat.

Ideally spent time together with both of them when they are fairly settled down - for example after they have been fed. Have your dog lie at your feet and let your cat sit in your lap and read a book or watch TV.

Of course, it's also essential to teach your dog the "Leave it!" command. You will need it later on for more things than just cats. Put the puppy on a long, soft leash all the time; when you see it's getting ready to attack the cat, pull the leash.

Of course, this is quite time consuming at first. But it will all get better soon. If your dog makes eye contact with the cat, stands up and takes a step forward, he will most likely attack it - be ready to pull on the leash at that point.

If, on the other hand, your dog behaves himself, don't forget to reward him! Introduce the dog to neighborhood cats as well, it's important to teach the puppy to leave alone all the cats, not just yours.

And finally, if you feel you're not making any progress by yourself, don't be afraid to ask for specialized help from a trainer.
