Tinnitus Treatments -Choosing the Right One For You

By Graeme Teague

Tinnitus is a disturbing condition where you hear phantom sounds in your ears, which may be a ringing or humming or more like the flow of a stream. Nobody likes this particular condition so it's normal to want to find a good treatment for it. Sadly, this isn't your basic illness with an easy over the counter cure. There are, though, some very good treatments for the condition and we'll explore a few of them here.

If you're looking for some effective tinnitus treatments, you'll find the information we've gathered for this article helpful. Until you've found the right approach, it's worth trying as many treatments as possible.

Tinnitus can be controlled to some degree with medications that your doctor will prescribe for you. These may be drugs that are used to treat an underlying medical condition, such as hypertension or diabetes, or to treat the tinnitus symptoms directly. There are many different diseases, such as depression and heart problems, that have drug treatments that can actually remove the ringing in your ears. Whether or not any of these medications will help relieve your tinnitus symptoms is something you can only find out by trying them. A side effect that may occur may be increased ringing in your ears, something you need to contact your doctor about right away.

Tinnitus can sometimes be relieved by changing your diet or making other lifestyle changes. Some people notice that their tinnitus symptoms can be connected to certain foods or habits, so if they stop eating these foods or perhaps stop smoking or drinking they can reduce or eliminate their symptoms. While tinnitus is not usually caused by a serious medical condition, once exception can be hypertension; if this is a problem for you, then you should make a healthier diet and lifestyle a priority. Yet even in the absence of such a medical cause, you may find that certain foods, like those that are high in salt or fats may bring on your tinnitus symptoms.

Believe it or not sometime the best thing you can do for your tinnitus is to clean the wax out of your ears. You can do this in a lot of ways but trust us when we tell you that some methods are superior to others. If you have been told (or even just suspect) that your tinnitus is the result of too much ear wax, ask your doctor to remove the ear wax during your visit. Doing it yourself can be risky, as you may just push it further into your ear canal or even do damage. Candle waxing is popular now but it isn't totally safe; you could wind up burning yourself! If you'd like to try a safe method for removing ear wax by yourself you should use the ear drops that have been made specifically for this purpose or some warm (but not hot) baby or olive oil. Allow the oil to circulate in your ear canal and then allow it to drip freely back out.

As there are so many causes of tinnitus and so many possible treatments, you may have to try various alternatives. Some tactics, like using white noise to help divert you, and avoiding loud noises, can be safely used by anyone. More powerful or intrusive approaches, such as prescription medication, may be suggested by your doctor in some cases. Tinnitus can be difficult to get rid of, but some treatments, including the ones covered in this article, have helped many people, so there's no reason to despair.
