The two main purposes of laser acne treatments in health care are treating acne and improving the appearance of acne scars. They are very popular but can be expensive and are not right for all conditions. So what are laser acne treatments and what can you expect if you choose them in consultation with your doctor or dermatologist?
There are 3 main applications of lasers in the treatment of acne itself.
The first would be to use them in burning away hair follicle. Most pimples form when sebum clogs up a hair follicle, so destroying the follicle will prevent any more acne on that site. This could take a while since there's a huge number of hair follicles in the skin even though this is good for any area on the face where we don't want hair.
Second would be using them in order to burn away the sebaceous gland where sebum is formed. To help prevent acne, some of the sebaceous glands need to be removed since many people produce excess sebum especially during adolescence and young adulthood. There might be a possibility of this causing dry skin later in life, however.
Third, the bacteria in an infected pimple can be oxidized. Although the bacteria is killed, it won't prevent other pimples from forming later.
Lasers are also used in the treatment of acne scars, in two different ways. First, there is laser resurfacing. In order for new and healthy skin to be formed, the middle layer of the skin is tightened while the top and scarred layer is removed. With a local anesthetic, this is usually done in the doctor's or dermatologist's office. The procedure can take about an hour but it will depend on the size of the affected area. The healing time for the skin will be about 3-10 days.
Then there's a new form of acne scar treatment: fractional laser therapy. This works at a deeper level and does not damage the top layer of skin. It's not usually covered on health insurance and it's an expensive procedure unlike the other laser acne treatments.
