Have Fun With Your Dog

By Alison Heath

The word pet is not something you can always apply to dogs. If there is one person, or in this case an animal, that we can totally rely on for support and companionship it would be our dog. It's not enough that we feed them and give them a place to stay. Keeping them strong and healthy would take some work.

Making the effort to spend some time with your dog helps in building your trust with one another. The more time you spend time with your dog, then the more your dog learns to trust you; time spent together makes you familiar with each others' moods, gestures and feelings.

You can try various methods to teach your dog new tricks, what's important is that it should be fun for both of you; since you're making learning easy for him, he'll be more eager to please you.

Follow The Leader would be a good game. You would need a group to play this game so gather fellow dog lovers together. Your primary goal here is to get your dog to follow when called, so get him to tag along as you make your way around the cones and cans on the ground. To reinforce what the dog has learned, see if you can have the leaders change places and then go through the whole procedure again.

Play Hide and Seek. You're thinking that only kids play this, but this is actually a good way to teach your dog to stay in place and then to search the person who calls their name, it will also develop patience in your dog and to learn to wait before moving of their own volition.

To make it more fun, you can hide treats in secret places and have your dog search for it.

This exercise will teach your dog to use his nose to search for objects and you get to give him the treats as the prize.

You could also bring your dog with you when you go out for your early morning jog. This way you and your dog can get some exercise and keep both of you physically healthy. Take this time to have some quality time with your dog, play a little Frisbee or fetch the ball; this will get your dog very excited as they try to catch the Frisbee or the ball and it will also teach your dog to focus on an object and fetch it for you.

Make the time you spend with your dog worthwhile by playing different games with him. Your dog learns how to behave properly when you take the time to play these games with him, it also makes the owner appreciate the times he spend with his dog better.
