Valuable Advice For Training Your Dog Effectively

By Albert Paul

Dog training is a great way to spend time with your dog, bond with him, and get a well behaved dog out of the deal as well. Your dog needs to know who the boss is in the house, and dog training produces great results. This article can help you choose the dog training that is right for your dog.

Don't expect too much of your dog, too soon. Puppies will be puppies. That is what makes them so cute. The key to training them to act appropriately, is consistency. Be consistent in immediately reinforcing good behavior and eventually, your dog will get the message. Just don't expect them to become fully trained overnight.

When it comes to grooming activities, familiarize your pet with common handling as early as possible. Dogs require grooming regardless of breed and getting your pet used to having her paws, face and ears handled regularly makes the grooming process less stressful for both of you. Whether you do your own grooming or have it done professionally, train your dog to accept handling common to grooming.

Start potty training as soon as possible. While an eight week old puppy will not have the vaccines required to go outside for long periods of time, they can have short trips outside to learn how to do their business. Every time they do their business, treat and praise excitedly. Your puppy will be a potty champion in no time.

To successfully train your dog, start by making sure to use its name when you call it. Call your pet by name for feedings, walks and play, but never for punishment. This ensures that you will be able to get your dog's attention once you begin asking for more complex tricks.

You should teach your dog to walk on a loose leash. The process is simple: when taking your dog for walks, if he begins to pull, stop. As soon as the leash loosens, begin walking again. Being consistent with this will teach your dog that he will not get to proceed if he is pulling. This will allow for a much more enjoyable walk for you, and also save your arm muscles from getting too sore!

Remember to give praise for good behavior. If your dog is doing what you want him to do, praise him. Don't make the mistake of only giving your dog attention when he is misbehaving. When you do that, you are training your dog to misbehave. Dogs like attention, and negative attention is better than no attention at all.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is to be firm with orders and do not overuse your commands. This is important because if you over-saturate your commands, your dog will not be as responsive. Only give your dog orders when you are looking for a response.

Many people are surprised to discover just how easy it is to significantly lessen canine behavior problems. So try some of the advice we mention and you'll soon discover, just as many happy pet owners already have, that with just a little bit of work, and a lot of consistency, your dog will be much happier and better behaved.
