How To Choose The Best Dog Treats For Unique Pets

By Laura Gallagher

Dog treats made in the USA have many sizes and shapes. Some are vegetarian and very healthy while others come from wholesale vendors at discounts. They form a large part of socializing and training, and choosing those the dog likes is crucial to this. When looking through all that's available, it can be hard to know what to look for.

Positive reinforcement training is done using combined praise and snacks. This is a very efficient method. If the dog is disinterested in the treat he's given, however, it won't have much benefit. But there are plenty of animals with obesity, as well as those which are vegetarian. This makes the choice more complex.

When offering a treat as part of training, it's important to reward the pet within seconds so that he relates it with what he's just done. A treat can also be used as a reward outside of formal training to reinforce good behaviour. For example if the dog lies quietly or greets guests calmly, a treat will communicate that his behaviour is positive and he'll be encouraged to do the same more often.

Supermarket biscuits are easy to buy and inexpensive. They are, however, usually very high in fat and carbs. The carbohydrate content is a problem for dogs with certain allergies. It also increases plaque production on the teeth.

Chewy items are excellent because they massage the gums, keeping teeth healthier. However, nylabones, which are a stronger form of chew treat, can be dangerous. They're generally made for more enthusiastic chewers, but they can be broken into smaller pieces that can become choking hazards.

Nylabones should be selected according to the size of the animal. Pig ears are often loved by pets but they're very fatty, so they need to be an infrequent reward. When using chewy dog treats made in the USA, supervision is important so the treat can be removed when it becomes a choking hazard due to its size.
