All prospective cat owners must be aware of the cat fact that these animals have an inherent desire to scratch. Scratching is one of the natural behaviors of cats. Scratching is done to mark the territory. Aside from the visible scratch marks, the cat will be leaving its distinct scent as well. Between the paws of the cat are glands that release the cat's distinctive scent that is left on the spot scratched by the cat. Scratching is the cat's way of keeping their claws in good condition. A scratching post will prevent the pet from being destructive.

Cats have the habit of covering their poop. Not all cats though are the same. A lot of cat owners are concerned by the cat's habit to pee and poop anywhere but not on the litter box. Failure to use the litter box can be a sign of a feline problem. Lower urinary tract infection causes painful urination thus the pet urinate frequently at inappropriate spots. The urgent need to pee will prevent the cat from using the litter box.

Stress is a possible reason for the cat's inclination to eliminate inappropriately. A cat owner would know that the pet tends to form habits. A change in the environment caused by a move to a new house or a new pet will be stressful for the cat. Cats that refuse the litter box may be asking for the owners' attentions. A dirty litter box will not be used by a cat. Cats would not use a litter box if it is dirty because they are very clean animals.

A pet parent has to understand the behavior of the pet. Cat owner have to learn the different vocalizations and body language used by the cat. It would be up to the owner to understand what the pet wants to communicate. Cat problems can be prevented by understanding what the common behavior of the pet mean.
