Though the average dog owner does not always care if the dog is pure bred or not, there is a growing number of people that much prefer to own pure breeds. No matter where you go to get your pet, you must make sure that the its breeder went through the proper documentation and registration processes to ensure its optimum health.

From shepherd and hunting dogs, to dogs good in cold or wet weather, there are many different kinds of dog breeds to choose from. However, for a breeder's dogs to be officially recognized as pure bred, there are many set standards that must be met and adhered to. As such, it is usually best to use the various local and national kennel clubs locate the best pure bred dogs. The best known of these kennel clubs maintain thorough records, some very old, of the various details and qualities of many lineages of dogs.

Depending on what state you live in, there might be different registration processes for certain kinds of pure breed dogs. Dogs will usually go through various degrees of inspection, including eye, hip, and joint examinations. A specialist must also identify specific factors and working qualities prior to a given dog being certified as pure bred. You will find that most of the dogs that are highly documented are the ones that were carefully bred.

While the prices of different lineages can be justified according to registration, there are more important reasons why dogs must be properly registered. Every breed of dog has specific inherited characteristics, which, unfortunately, sometimes include certain ailments, conditions, even diseases. The registries will show if a particular dog has a family history of things like eye problems, heart conditions, or bone and joint ailments. Besides wanting a healthy pet, you also want to make sure that these serious health conditions are not passed on to future generations of dogs.

It is always best to deal with breeders that go about their jobs with high ethics and morals, focusing on the health and wellbeing of the animals. Take your time and use the many records on breeds and breeders that good kennel clubs keep. It could equally be a good idea to learn research the kennels clubs themselves, to learn about their histories and the methods they use to evaluate breeds.
