Sustainable Agriculture and the Ways to Achieve It

By Lianne Derocco

Agriculture has always been the top source of food for people. It cannot be argued that most of the food that people eat is a product of agricultural activity. While farmers make it a point to increase productivity in order to achieve their targets, they also need to ensure sustainability. It is through sustainable agriculture that they could be guaranteed of better yield in the days to come. Aside from this, it is also through sustainable agriculture that they could be sure that the food that people eat is safe.

It is not only the safety of the food though that is the main concern of sustainable agriculture. Agriculture should also be carried out without making any bad effect on the environment. You should know though that raising pigs could have an adverse effect on the environment. Despite this, you should try hard to make sure that such activity does not badly affect the environment without having to worry about the possible reduction of productivity. Apparently, there is a need for you to know what the best methods are in livestock-raising the sustainable way.

If possible, you should also try reducing the population of pigs in your farm because this would also lessen the environmental impact. The rule here is that when you have too many pigs, there would also be too much waste produced. Obviously, it is waste disposal that has always been the problem. Actually, if you do decide to decrease the hog population, you also make your pigs a lot healthier in the process. Of course, this would also mean better quality of meat in the end.

There is another option that farmers could consider if they wish to lessen the impact on the environment. They could implement a smaller, free-range pig farm instead. While this method is a sure fire way of ensuring that the environment is not overburdened by pig farming, it also happens to be a poor technique when the aim is to increase the profit margin for farmers. Besides, free-rang pig farming also requires a greater parcel of land meant for the farm. The more pigs that are farmed the bigger also the necessity to increase the land area.

The one big problem that hog farms are usually confronted with is the waste that is produced by a huge number of pigs. You need to make sure that such waste is disposed of in the best way possible. Fortunately, there are already certain products that are being sold in the market. Such products are meant to resolve the environmental problems created by pig waste while at the same time increasing the nutrient value for fertilizer purposes.

Agra Sphere and Lagoon Agra Sphere are two products that you should try. These are very effective in making your waste lagoon less harmful to the environment. Through the use of these products, you significantly reduce the issues of bad odor, crusting, and fly infestation, as well as reducing the sludge layer. As a farmer who bears the responsibility of making the farm sustainable, these products would certainly be of great help.
