Taking Care of Cats: Avoiding Fleas

When you are thinking of having a pet, cats are a good option because it does not require high maintenance compared to dogs except that you have to watch out for fleas. It is the common parasite that can make your pet sick. You need to learn more about cats and fleas so that you can exercise preventive measures as they say prevention is better than cure.

The outdoors will get your cat more fleas. Fleas can cause allergies to cats which can be really itchy and may turn into a skin disease. If remained untreated, it may lead to a bubonic plague or even anemia. For baby cats, the fleas will make them really weak and may lead them to death. Therefore, it is relevant that people who have cats as pets know how to prevent fleas from infesting their pets.

You need to check your cat for any flea infestation. Be sure to know of the signs and symptoms of flea infestations so that you will know if there is an infestation. If you notice that your cat has been scratching than the usual, it is more likely that there is a flea. Using a tooth comb to brush your cat will let you know. When you have a tooth comb, you can brush your cat regularly and in so doing you prevent further infestation. Whenever you catch flea, use water that is warm to drown it. Though you can squash them, but if there are so many flea, squashing will not be practical.

When the fleas are all over your house, it is very possible that you get bitten and you will also be itching like your cat. Flea treatment have to be immediately resorted so that flea can be put to a stop. Fleas can be a persistent pests as they have a lifespan of 2 years. There are some options you can take for flea treatment so that you can avoid existing fleas from having more eggs. The most widely used method is insecticide. There is an insecticide to kill and adult flea and there is also one that kills the eggs.

There are other methods that can be utilized. There is a specific shampoo for fleas. When using the shampoo, take note of how long before your rinse the cat after shampooing. Of course part of the control and prevention is to clean the beddings of the cat and vacuum all the parts of the house. When you soak the beddings, soak it for 15 minutes with a flea shampoo. When cleaning the house, be sure to vacuum every corner. Change your sheets and wash the ones that has been used properly. You can buy your cat a flea collar. When you have the necessary information about cats and fleas, you will be able to appreciate your cat more.
