How to Prepare Your Dog for Your Baby

By Dirk Gruenberg

A pet is a great addition to your family. They can be the best pal that your family can have and they can also provide great joy at home. Everybody knows that dogs are very loyal and protective of their owners.

They want to make sure that you are happy and safe inside your house. In the event that you are getting ready for a baby in the future, it is important to remember how to introduce the little boy or girl to your pet.

Their first meeting will be quite exciting. Your priority, of course, should be the safety of your baby. That said there are a few things you can do in advance so that the meeting goes smoothly.

First and foremost: Make sure to have obedience trained your dog. Dogs are extremely smart animals and they can learn a lot of things. Before having the baby, you need to make sure that your dog obeys the commands you want him to.

If he is well-trained, he will know not to jump on people, including you during your pregnancy. Also, when the baby finally arrives, you can tell him to sit whenever it is convenient for you.

A lot of excitement comes with meeting the new little human being. If your dog listens to your commands then, you will have one less thing to worry about.

What you can also do before the meeting is to socialize your dog to babies: This second part can be done only if your dog has received basic obedience training. You can start by carrying your friend's baby in your home.

Keep a close eye on your dog during that time. Never let him get too close to the baby and always have him sit or lay down if he attempts to do so.

This way, your dog will know that he has to respect the baby's space. With this sort of training your dog can also get accustomed to a baby's smell, sound and features.
