Don't Just Put Up With Bad Behavior, Train Your Dog With These Simple Tips

By Alison Heath

Most people are drawn to dogs. Puppies can be quite destructive and often mischievous. Read the following information to learn more about training your loyal pal.

Having a regular feeding schedule makes house training much easier by putting their elimination needs on a schedule as well. This will give you the opportunity to understand when your dog needs to go to the bathroom. Then he will become practiced at waiting until the right time.

Don't use doggy treats as your sole positive reinforcement mechanism. It does work to give dog treats when they learn a new behavior. However, most people don't carry treats in their pockets 24/7. Petting and showing love to the dog are also good ways to reward your dog. You can use these kinds of positive reinforcements to encourage good behavior in addition to treats.

When house training your new puppy, accidents are likely to happen from time to time. Your training will go more smoothly if you always clean up accidents right away. When a dog uses the house to relive itself, the smell can linger on the carpet if not cleaned properly. You will then have a dog that will continue to use that same spot all of the time. You can buy a spray or carpet shampoo that will remove the odor.

When training a dog, watch that you do not overdo giving the dog treats. Too many treats can really plump a dog up. To keep your dog healthy, you really need to monitor their treat intake. It's an aspect often overlooked.

Keep your dog on a healthy diet. If the dog's diet is poor, it is not good for their health. It can damage your dog's health and affect their behavior. Something as easy as proper nutrition can make a dog more obedient.

When you are house training a dog, you may want to use a crate. Take your dog outside frequently and try to maintain a regular schedule in order to maximize the effectiveness of the crate. You will have fewer accidents if you take the time to crate train your dog.

Offer only your dog's most favored treats when rewarding exceptionally good behavior, or when he accomplishes particularly difficult feats. This can even be something that the dog is not normally permitted to have, like hot dogs or cheese.

Big dogs need a bed that can accommodate them, especially if they like to stretch and sleep on their back. Large, flat rectangle beds are made for large dogs. You can also get a little creative, and just buy a mattress made for a baby's crib. The latter option has its advantages. You can just rotate the sheets often by using sheets that are fitted to the mattress. Crib mattresses are also waterproof!

Your love of dogs and your desire to keep your house presentable should not conflict. If your dog is uncontrollable it can make it very difficult to have a clean and tidy home. Dog training is necessary if you want to have an obedient dog. These tips can help you live at peace with pets!
