Five Australian Shepherd Training Tips For You

By Jennifer Powell

It's well known that dogs are usually considered as man's best friend. Nevertheless, we do not let our friends jump on us or chew on our shoes and we shouldn't let our canine friends either. This post contains suggestions as to how you can provide your furry companion with appropriate Australian Shepherd training. If you are persistent in using suitable training approaches, you should notice a change in your dog's behavior in a short amount of time.

- When you are first starting out in training your canine, try to schedule the training sessions to occur at about the same time each day. If you are making the training sessions a positive experience and doing them on a schedule, your canine will quickly look forward to the sessions and enjoy them more.

- Time your rewards correctly. Timing is important when training a dog. Dogs have very short attention spans, and waiting a long time to reward a desirable behavior or reprimand a bad one will end up doing more harm than good. For instance, when training a dog to "quiet" when barking, giving of reward too soon after the barking will work the motivate the barking rather than stop it. Before you give the "quiet" command, wait a second or two, and then reward to make sure that your pet dog knows that it is the quiet behavior that is being rewarded.

- During Australian Shepherd training, never use a command he understands as a punishment. For example, if your canine needs a time out, do not put him in his crate. It may create a negative association for him. Another example is when you call your canine companion to you to be penalized. This hurts his likelihood of finishing successful recalls later in life.

- To train your furry pet effectively, you should learn to be firm with him but don't yell at him constantly. Try obtaining the right balance between being strict when your pet misbehaves and being a loving master the rest of the time. This produces a strong and happy relationship with your furry companion.

- Always conclude a training session with your canine on a positive note, even if you must manipulate the situation to make your canine companion successful. Concluding a training session soon after a disciplinary action will mean that your canine pet will remember the session to be about punishment, not about training.

Looking for useful training tips is equally as crucial as what you are hoping to achieve. The tips from this article can be a great addition to what you may already know on how you can improve on Australian Shepherd training.
