Socialization During Australian Shepherd Training

By Jennifer Powell

When you're trying new things, there is a good chance you may need some help. A new or inexperienced dog owner has a lot to learn about and may need some help to achieve successful Australian Shepherd training. The post below can provide you some good recommendations and pointers on how to be successful at socializing and training your pet dog. Do not surrender if it doesn't work for the first time. Success is always based on falling down and getting back up once more.

Socialization skills are a vital part of a well-rounded training program for any canine friend. Understanding how to get along with adults, children and other pets makes for a happy dog that is welcome in his surroundings. Your breeder should begin socialization with your puppy, however it's your responsibility to pursue it. It is necessary for a puppy to get accustomed to people and the environment around him, but he will need to be protected from becoming too overwhelmed or scared. Your work is to motivate your puppy's confidence as he goes out into the world.

When your puppy is already home with you, begin socializing him to the new environment you brought him into. Introduce him to other members of the family as well as other pets you might have. Make every encounter a pleasant one to help him develop positive association with them. A puppy must also be familiar with the typical sound and sight he might encounter daily to prevent fear, aggression and other behavior issues. These sounds include but not limited to doorbell, telephone, siren, thunder and many others while sights include cars passing by, delivery van in front of your house, elderly woman with a cane and so on.

Rewards can make Australian Shepherd training, including socialization, easy. If your dog behaves calmly during introduction or shows interest to an acceptable subject, reward him with a treat or praise to encourage the behavior. Through rewards, your pet will eventually figure out what behaviors are acceptable and otherwise.

While socialization is helpful in dealing with a variety of behavior problems, it isn't advisable to attempt to handle harmful situations alone. If your pet dog is exhibiting behavior that's threatening to you or others, you must remember your responsibility as a dog owner. An analysis by an animal behavior professional will be invaluable in guiding you through difficult situations. It will also ensure anyone involved is safe.
