Essential Facts About Fat Grafting

By Paulette Hart

The process of relocating fat from one area of the body to another for cosmetic purposes is called fat grafting. The procedure is completed by a plastic surgeon, who retrieves excess fat from the client's buttocks, thighs, or abdomen. The fat cells can then be placed in cold-storage for future use or used immediately.

A cosmetic procedure, fat grafting is generally used for the enhancement of facial characteristics. However, the procedure can be completed on virtually any area of the body. During the process, fat is taken from one of the aforementioned areas and whole fat cells are retrieved from the extracted fat and injected into the part of the body being enhanced.

Candidates who are ideal for such cosmetic surgery are individuals who are physically healthy, as well as both emotionally and mentally sound. In addition, those who do not use tobacco products are better candidates than their counterparts who smoke. The procedure is also easier for patients who have flexible, supple skin. Those with damaged or dry skin are not automatically banned from having such surgery; however, they may face an increased risk for complications.

One will usually see instant results after having the procedure. Initially, the area where the work was done may appear slightly swollen. However, when this subsides most patients are highly satisfied with their results.

A follow-up appointment is typically part of one's post-surgery instructions. The goal of this appointment is to give the surgeon the opportunity to determine that no complications have occurred. Depending on the kind of surgery performed, however, certain patients may be asked to return for additional procedures or multiple follow-up visits.

As with all surgeries, fat grafting is associated with a certain risks and side effects. After the procedure has been performed, some individuals may experience bruising or soreness. However, most cosmetic surgeons will prescribe medicine to ensure one is comfortable after his or her procedure. As always, it is in one's best interest to discuss potential risks and side effects with a qualified cosmetic professional before final decision is made to have a procedure.
