Tips In Selecting Your Own Thoroughbred

By Mari Orr

Sport horses are versatile and are known to be good in various disciplines. Among them is the Thoroughbred which is one of the most popular. It is known for its speed and ability to run for long distances.

They are not only for racing but also for other disciplines like dressage, polo, and others. The breed started many centuries ago in England when their local mares were bred with those that came mostly from the Middle East. The colors of these animals are usually brown, bay, and black. Having a white Thoroughbred is very rare although there are parts that could be white.

If you decide to buy your own horse, you have to make sure that it is the right one for your needs. You also have to check the lineage of the animal as it is very important. Do not purchase a product of inbreeding because it is more prone to health defects.

Aside from its lineage, you also have to observe the gait of the animal in the pasture. Look at it carefully as it walks and try to see if it has a graceful stride. Notice any sign that can show lameness and stay away from it.

Ask the past owner if the horse was able to get any training for any event. It is an advantage for you if it has some experience with any discipline. Make sure that the Thoroughbred does not have any sickness from previous competitions. To avoid this, you can choose something that has not been registered yet.

Some of these animals have a bad eating habit. Some of them are not able to keep their proper weight because they do not eat well. Do not buy them if you do not know how to handle that situation.

Take the Thoroughbred for a ride before making your decision. The ride can be comfortable or its opposite depending on the animal's build. There are those that are difficult to control that might cause problems when you bring them to an arena. It is important to select a horse that you enjoy riding.
