Things You Should Know About Cute Havanese Puppies

By Paulette Hart

Havanese puppies are very cute and quite irresistible. The correct name is Bichon Havanese. Other common names used some years back were Havana Silk Dog or Spanish Silk Poodle. This is the national dog of Cuba and the only native dog breed of that country.

The double coat looks like raw silk because of its pearly sheen. There are no guard hairs to the soft, light coat which gives good insulation against the tropical weather. In days gone by, the hair was left to cover the eyes to protect them from the fierce sun.

It is a small but solid dog. Adults weigh about 7 to 13 pounds. They are ideal for those who have allergies to dog hair. Although the coat may grow to the floor, they shed very little. However dead hair and dander needs to be removed by thorough grooming every three or four days. They are gentle and affectionate but not timid.

Because of the popularity of the breed, puppy mills may churn out puppies which may have a whole range of problems. Seek out a reputable breeder if you want to buy a puppy. Rescue puppies of this breed are sometimes available and are another option.

It is best if you can see a litter rather than a single animal. Ask to meet the parents if possible. The temperament of the parents is likely to be carried on to the offspring. Puppy mill breeders may have false papers for their dogs so check any registrations carefully.

One puppy is likely to appeal to you. The bold puppy isn't necessarily the pick of the litter. A puppy which hangs back a little may be more intelligent or may not be feeling so well on that day. If you want to buy a puppy that seems a little off-colour, ask if you can come back when it is well.

These dogs need plenty of grooming so accustom your puppy to being brushed from his early days. Inspect his ears, eyes, teeth and nails as a matter of course so that he regards such inspections as routine. You might like to clip the hair from the inside corner of the eye and around the genitals simply to make hygiene easier. Havanese puppies are bound to bring you lots of happiness.
