How Large Do Saltwater Fish Grow

By Paul Martin

Handy tips for the noob Sea Aquarist

It is very good when one wants to shop around for those truly awesome looking colored fish that you would like to keep in your saltwater aquarium. So many are amazing to observe and the spectrum of colors are something that can take your breath away. One thing but that is seemingly unknown to the new Saltwater Aquarist or in truth any beginner Aquarist most often is researching the size of the fish you would like in your tank.

Paying some concern for detail and research can help to save you a lot of time and money. There are that many species that can be harbored in a modern marine aquarium, but you need to take under consideration how much each species will grow, and what size they can and will reach.

Keeping a correct balance in your tank is of first seriousness as over loading the eco-system will undoubtedly cause major water quality problems. Some follow the 1 in. of fish per gallon of water. I believe in a lot of ways this could work, however it in truth means mature fish inches as in what size will the fish turn out to be? Not what size it is now when you buy it.

In a larger tank, the one inch of mature fish per gallon could be OK. I have personally always used as a guideline, one 3 in. mature animal per 5 gallons of water particularly for marine tanks. Water quality can be hard to maintain as it is so don't even come close to the eco-system limit. Therefor a 50 gallon Marine Tank can hold 30 inches of mature livestock.

I treat each cleaning animal (shrimp and crabs) as a 3 inch animal and each invert the same way. Under-stocking your tank will never be a bad thing. Keep in mind that all life in the tank will grow. Some will grow to the environment and some will just grow to full-size no matter what size the tank. Keeping this in mind will without doubt deaden some major water problems down the road.

It's so crucial to grasp the potential size that some livestock can achieve and keeping fish of about the same size as larger fish will become aggressive with smaller fish and thus a great number of fish funerals.

Always think ahead when making plans for the tank and what will be contained therein. Being proactive now will save you both money and time in the future.
