How to Prevent or Treat Parasitic Infestation on Horses

Parasites are known to steal nutrients from the food taken by your horse and will cause gastrointestinal irritations. If left un-mended, your horse may build up colic and other intestinal diseases. Many of them actually die. Be sure to give your horse with these three things - clean water, good de-worming program and high quality feed.

Loads of people dont know but there are over 150 various kinds of parasites that could infest your horse. The large bloodwords or stronglyes include pinwords, threadworms, lungworms, ascarids, bots and tapeworms. And think about this, such types lay up to 200,000 eggs a day. What's more overwelming is that they all could be present in your horse's intestinal tract simultaneously. The only difference would be their lifecycle stages. In most cases, your horse may even seem healthy from the exterior. But from within, you dont know what's occurring. The danger of having parasitic organisms is that they do not maintain their area of damage in the intestines. From time to time, they can damage your blood vessels and other vital organs in your abdomen. Pinworms can really irritate horses and induce intense anal itching. Signs and symptoms of parasitic presence are rough coat, weight loss, depression, colic, tall rubbing, nasal discharge and loss of appetite. The best thing to do if you see these signs is talk to your Veterinarian about getting a fecal examination.

By counting the kinds and number of eggs, the Vet can then tell you which de-worming program will work. You can give wormer four ways, oral paste syringe, oral liquid syringe, nasogastric tube and as a feed additive. In many cases horses will not feed on something they smell in their feed, so if you can work with the other two methods, you'd carry out worming effectively. Nasogastric ingestion will have to be done by the vets. To make sure they do swallow the dose, you can do one of two things. Place your thumbs into either side of their mouth to make them open their mouth and swallow the paste or liquid they were holding in their mouth, or put your hand under their chin and tip their head up so they must swallow. Amidst common knowledge, internal parasites could definitely kill farm pets. This doesnt leave out horses. Internally, these parasites can cause several extensive damages.
