Seek Out French Bulldog Breeders For Healthy Dogs

By Laura Gallagher

If you are in the market for a French bulldog, contact reputable French bulldog breeders. You can be assured their dogs have been screened for genetic problems. You can then look forward to your new companion having a long, healthy life.

This small, sturdy dog has been bred to be a companion, a role he fulfills with gusto. He loves romping and is affectionate and clownish. However he is also quiet in the house and ideal for smaller living quarters. He suits older couples or singles as well as families.

They stand about 12 inches high. The face is flattened which sometimes causes breathing problems, especially in hot weather. They also need a little extra attention if they need to be anesthetized. The ears are held erect with the edges curving slightly forward. The prominent eyes are relatively large and can be prone to corneal ulcers as the dog ages.

They are good watchdogs but don't bark without cause. It is an intelligent, brave dog, given to acting the clown with its family. This breed is great in the house, being compact and low maintenance. They shed very little and have a quiet manner.

Abnormalities of the vertebrae associated with having a short back are sometimes passed on to pups. A reputable breeder will ensure he breeds only from the healthiest animals. Reliable breeders will have their stock X-rayed before breeding from them.

If you decide to breed from your French bulldog, be prepared to pay for a cesarean. Puppies often have relatively large heads and shoulders. The tapering body and narrow pelvis of the bitch means that a significant number have trouble giving birth. Some French bulldog breeders are actively selecting for bloodlines that have less of these problems.

Stud dogs will be screened for hip dysplasia by French bulldog breeders. This can take place once the animal is over twelve months old. Dogs with excessively loose ligaments over the hips and those with significant obstructions to the airways would also be culled from breeding programs. By purchasing your French bulldog from a registered breeder, you will be guaranteed a healthy animal.
