Waste Management in Farms

By Lianne Derocco

Farms have always been considered as the top sources of food for people in all corners of the globe. Whether these are meant for livestock or for crops, the general objective of farms is to supply food to the population. Ironically though, the farms could also be the source of something else that is harmful to people. This is because these, particularly the livestock farms, could be the source of anything that is toxic. Such toxic materials are not only bad for the environment but also for people and the livestock as well.

In the case of hog farms, it is usually the waste lagoons that bring about the most amount of toxic waste. If these are not maintained very well, these could leak and spill. Once there is a spillage or a leak, the next thing that could happen is the contamination of the local water supply. Of course, the contamination would pose a great amount of health risk to humans in the area. Even the animals in the farm could also be subjected to such dangers.

Aside from the possibility of spills or leaks in the waste lagoon, you would also have to deal with the usual problems related to waste management in the farm. Among those issues that you would surely encounter are bad odors, sludge buildup and top-level crusting. Fortunately, these are issues that are no longer impossible to resolve. If you neglect this responsibility of cleaning the lagoon often, you would certainly encourage pollution and sickness. Of course, you would not want to have such problems in your locality. This is why you should give attention to such issues.

There is no better way at ensuring that the livestock waste is treated the correct way than to go through the natural route. A farmer in this regard would try to apply treatment solutions that are non-toxic and natural. Fortunately, there are already several manufacturers that have come up with waste treatment solutions that have proven to be truly natural. This is a much better alternative to using chemical-based substances that may just bring more harm than good to the environment and to the farm itself.

There are two particular products that have been found to be excellent in waste treatment; these are Agra Sphere and Lagoon Agra Sphere. It is with these products that you would be able to solve the problem of sludge buildup. If you do not deal with the sludge, cleaning the lagoon or deep pit system is very difficult. Other problems that occur with poor maintenance include toxic odors, fly infestation and crusting.

When the crusting at the top level of the lagoon becomes worst, the said solutions may no longer be as effective and need an extra boost of treatment. Under this circumstance, it would be much better that the farmer uses the Activator Plus or Lagoon Activator. With the use of such solutions, top-level crusting is prevented effectively. A farmer who finds out that there is already crusting in his waste lagoon should not hesitate to apply such solutions.
