How To Choose A Pet Hospital San Antonio

By Delia Hewitt

Hospitals for pets are not around every corner, the way they are for humans. Thus, it's very important to find and pick a pet hospital San Antonio ahead of time, in case your pet ever needs their services.

If your personal vet offers emergency services, such as a pager or cell phone number for 24/7 access, then you might not need an emergency care center. But it can be a good idea, in case your usual vet is ill, unable to answer the phone, or handling another emergency. And for certain situations, the additional personnel and equipment at an emergency center will be needed, anyway.

Pay a visit to your local veterinary emergency center before you need to use them. The staff should be friendly, they should have protocols in place for various types of emergencies, and they should be willing to answer your questions. If you have an exotic pet, make sure to ask if there is an exotics specialist on staff, and whether the other vets see exotics if necessary on an emergency basis.

Most people choose an emergency center after they have already found a regular veterinarian. If you are faced with choosing both at the same time, however, choosing a vet that works in a clinic affiliated with an emergency center can be a good choice. This is because in this case, the emergency vet would be able to call up your pet's files during their care as needed, which can be tremendously helpful.

Vets understand that people have money concerns, even during emergencies. It's a good idea to ask what the situation is at your emergency center of choice before you need it, because you won't want to be thinking about money while trying to treat your desperately ill or injured pet. Knowing ahead of time if the pet hospital San Antonio has a billing plan, or accepts your credit card, will make things go much more smoothly.

Some people will have more choices than others. Living in a major metropolitan area, there are probably five emergency vet centers within fifteen minutes of you. If you live in a more rural area, this may not be the case. If your choice is hard to get to, or a long ways away, keeping a print out of directions to it somewhere easily accessible is a good idea.

The most important thing is to be prepared. No one likes to think about their pets getting ill or injured, but it's better to be prepared if they ever are. Knowing where the center is, what kind of payment they take, and how to get there is vitally important when seconds count.
