How You Can Help Dog Charities

By Charles England

With the increase in abandoned pets over the last few years, the dog shelters are becoming over flowing. Every animal that enters the shelter will touch your heart, and although you cannot home them all you can help them. You can help out without putting your hand in your pocket, as volunteers are always welcome. Whether you want to help raise money, walk dogs or generally help around the shelter, there is always plenty to do.

Fund raising is a huge part of the work that is needed for the dog charities, although they receive a lot of donations this is never enough. The army of volunteers that are needed is huge, and joining this team will give you a sense of pride. Fundraising has always been difficult, however if you think out of box, and come up with new ideas you will be successful. Using the internet to help is a great tool, and the perfect way to reach a larger audience.

Although money is a huge part of what the dog charities need they also need many other things as well. The amount of petsthat can be in the shelter at any one time is massive, and these take a lot of care. It is hard for the full time workers to ensure that they are giving enough time to each individual dog. Offering your time for free can sometimes be far greater than a money donation; there is always plenty to do. Walking all of the dogs takes a great deal of time and effort every day, something you may be able to help with. By offering your time to walk the dogs it will give the workers time to focus on other things. The dogs will love being out, and having one on one contact with people. Many of the dogs love walking, and spending time with people. This small gesture can mean a huge amount to the pets in the shelter. If they are unable to go for a walk some of the dogs will simply love your company and attention. The dogs don't understand why they have gone from homes that they love to the dog shelter. Giving them fuss and attention can make their stay happier.

As well as walking there is always a great deal to do at the dog shelter. You can offer to volunteer there several times a week helping to feed and clean out the dogs. Although not the most glamorous part to the care it is essential and needs doing. Every bit of help that you can offer will be appreciated by the staff and the dogs. The biggest way you can help the pets in the shelter is of course to adopt them.

You will find that you have to be quite tough to spend time in a dog shelter, as every single one will touch your heart. If it is possible adoption is a great way to help out, not only does it give a dog a great home, but also gives the shelter more space. You should spend some time seriously considering if you can adopt the pets, as you do not want them ending back in the shelter. Dogs from the shelter make very loving pets, which will become part of your family very easily.
