Why Mice Make The Perfects Pets

By Margaret White

When most people think about getting a pet, a mouse would be one of the last animals to come to mind. However, mice make great pets for many people. These little creatures, are cute, funny, energetic and curious. They rarely bite and the more they are handled the more they love being handled. Here are some reasons why a mouse may make the perfect pet for you.

A mouse takes up little space. If you live in an apartment or a small house and don't have much available space then a mouse or even two or three mice can be an ideal choice for a pet. Mice are extremely small creatures and one can live comfortably in a 5 gallon aquarium with a screen top and two or three are quite happy in a ten gallon aquarium.

Mouse careis relatively easily. Caring for a mouse is not difficult. All a mouse really needs is proper food, water, a little attention, to have his cage cleaned daily and to have medical attention when needed. Compared to many other animals that need daily grooming, frequent baths and large amounts of interaction with people mouse care takes little time or effort making having a mouse for a pet a good choice for people with limited time.

Mouse care is inexpensive. Caring for a mouse or even two or three mice is quite inexpensive. Rodent food is much cheaper than dog or cat feed and lasts for a long period of time. Your mouse does not need specialized toys and can happily make do with empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls, egg cartons and other items you can find around the house. Many inexpensive bird toys make great toys for your mouse as well.

Mice can be quite affectionate and their small size makes them easy to handle. Mice who are raised to be pets rarely bite and if they do due to their small size you won't suffer serious injury as you might with a dog or a cat. Proper food for your mouse is simple and easy as there is premixed rodent food that meets all or most of your mouse care needs. Of course, giving your mouse treats such as small amounts of fruit such as apples or strawberries, carrots and green leafy vegetables will keep your mouse happy.

Mice are short term pets. Many people hesitate getting a pet because they are not sure that they can commit to a pet for the next ten years or more. For these people, mice are the perfect pet because they have a relatively short lifespan with a healthy mouse living only about 1 to 2 years. This makes mice perfect pets for elderly people who are worried about their pets out living them. Considering how little effort is needed for mouse care, how inexpensive these pets are to buy and keep, and how little room they need to remain healthy and happy, mice are the perfect pets for many people. While these curious little creatures are not right for every family, for those who want a loving and fairly low maintenance pet this is one little creature that has a lot to offer.
