Turnout Rugs Uses And Benefits In Horse Warmth

By Jeffery James

Among all the animals that exist today, horses have worn the hearts of many. They are associated with royalty everywhere. They are also sold highly, probably higher that some motor vehicles. This emanates from the fact that they carry themselves with superior grace. These animals like to roam freely where there is a lot of space. They survive well in warm areas than in cold weather. That's why turnout rugs are important, to provide them with warm and comfort.

There are several factors that must be considered when selecting the best covering for a horse. They come in different weights, making it quite difficult to make a pick. It is however, very simple. All the coverings are usually categorized in lightweight, medium or heavy weight. The coverings are usually filled with stuff. The heavier the covering is, the heavier the fillings are and vice versa. Heavier covers provide more protection during the cold season.

Medium and lightweight are suitable for areas whose climate is not severe. If the area experiences different degrees of cold, it's best to purchase mats of different weights. One single mat will obviously not solve the problem. It is therefore advisable to purchase mats to suit different kinds of weather. If the weather is just beginning to get cold, then the cover will do. However, if the weather starts getting extreme, add some blankets to the mats. This may solve the problem.

If the horse is bred in winter conditions, then several mats and blankets are necessary. In summer, only a single lightweight mat will solve the problem. During summer, the horses may not use the rugs at all hence, no need to use them. Quality rugs are waterproof and durable. The coating should be thick enough to provide enough heat all year. The threads should also be strong to withstand pressure and to avoid tearing. These materials are very expensive therefore. Taking care of them can help avoid any additional costs.

Horses just like human beings like to walk freely and comfortably. The covers therefore should not be too tight otherwise the horses' movement may be compromised. To increase mobility, some mats are designed with frills. Whatever the case, the coat should offer enough heat during cold seasons for the whole season. Re-coating like earlier mentioned should not be an issue at whatever time.

The covers are usually sold in pieces, not just one whole piece. Separating materials is important to ensure that horses can move freely while roaming around. When buying the covers, it is important to confirm that all the pieces are complete. The pieces should be large enough to fit the horses and a little overlapping is recommended.

There are some covers that are designed to fit perfectly on the horses' body. The cover should have adjustable capabilities. This is important especially if the horse is still growing.

Horses like to graze near fences and trees. Chances of being pricked are high in such areas hence, the reason why turnout rugs must be strong and tough to resist tear. Look around and compare prices from different stores, before making a purchase in order to get the best deal.
