Top Tips for a Happy Pet Rabbit

By Charles England

When looking for petsfor your children there are several things that you will need to consider. Although dogs and cats are often the favorite choice, something smaller and easier to keep may be preferred. Having a rabbit is an ideal pet for children, no matter what age they are. They are clean, friendly and can be kept both inside and out. This makes them the perfect first pet for your children to have.

Although rabbits do take slightly more care than other smaller animals, your child will learn so much from them. Having pets in the house is a great way to teach your children responsibility, and they will very soon bond with therabbit. Before heading for the pet store to purchase your new pet, you should consider going to the animal shelter. There are many different animals including rabbits that need good homes. Often they have been abandoned through no fault of their own, and simply need love and care.

Once you have decided on the rabbit for your family, you will need to ensure that it has everything it requires. If the rabbit is to live outside it will need a large hutch, and run so that it can exercise daily. The hutch will need to be weatherproof and secure, as often these pets are seen as food for wild animals. The hutch should have some dry bedding for the rabbit to sleep in, and an area for food and water. Rabbits also make great house pets and many people choose to keep them inside.

If you are aiming to have your rabbit in the house it will need to be safe for them. Cables and house plants will be very inviting to them. Although they can live indoors they will still need to get a certain amount of sunlight to remain happy and healthy. Taking them outside at least once a day to exercise is important. Although rabbits do tend to get on with other animals, however, if you have other pets you should ensure they are happy together before leaving them alone.

Rabbits are very social creatures and love the company of people, making them great pets to own. When you first bring your rabbit home from the animal shelter it may be very nervous. You should ensure that you spend time reassuring your rabbit, and handling it as much as possible. You will need to allow your new pet to get used to their surroundings, and they may be nervous for a while. If you have small children you need to make sure that they do not grab at the rabbit and scare it. You need to build up the trust with your new pet, so they understand that you are not going to hurt them.

Although your rabbit will love your company, they may be lonely and introducing another one can help them to remain happy. If you are considering having more than one rabbit you should either get two at the same time or when they are very young. This will stop them fighting and ensure they get along. The animal shelter always has plenty of rabbits to home, so you will never be lost where to get a friend for your beloved pet.
