Secrets to Potty Train Your Dog

By Lyndon Xavier

Do you ever have a problem raising a pet with uncontrollable bad habits. Rest assured, you do not need to be a professional dog trainer just to raise a pet to be obedient. The most challenging obstacles that new pet owners face is undoubtedly trying to house train their pet.

Dogs are, by impulse, really clean pets. They would rather not even soil any areas where they commonly get in bed or eat food. Dogs are likewise creatures of routine --- they love to recognize where they are likely to urinate and defecate. When the dog is coached to go potty on gravel or cement, they are going to have a tendency to find either of those surfaces when they need to take action. If they're taught to get rid of on grass or dirt, then that is exactly the type of surface they are going to pick. Utilize these programs to your great advantage.

This is the starting point. Be sure the spot you select is small, enclosed. A bathing room works best for this, or a spot in a kitchen area or service area also works properly. Understand that crate training helps with young puppies or small dogs, however for the bigger pets, the crate can become too confining.

The next step is to make note of the times of day that you feed your dog. Like we mentioned earlier, dogs are entirely creatures of habit. Just as how you should be feeding your dog at the same time everyday, dogs will soon start to pee and poo at certain times of the day. Note when the time that your dog needs to relieve themselves occurs in relation to their feeding time, and you can designate a toilet area and time that much easier.

If you need to teach this process quicker, you will have to be there as a way to reward your dog for successful eliminations. It is also essential never to punish for errors. That will only serve to confuse the dog and slow the training further. Of course, if all else fails, you can always look into dog obedience training schools and find an expert to help resolve your problem.
