At what age should a male dog be allowed to mate?

By Jerry Welsh

Gosh, my dog has barely left puppyhood but it is already mounting my friend's pet. A male dog's interest in sex starts very early. Dogs that still have the chubby and cuddly appearance of puppies will be seen humping and trying to mount female dogs that are much bigger and older. Male dogs would make sexual advances to other male dogs.

Puppies would be seen humping and mounting the litter mates. Male dogs appear to be oversexed as if they cannot mount other dogs, they will try to mount other animals. A pet owner will surely be embarrassed if the pet humps the legs of other people. However, these are normal sexual actions of dogs. The early interest in sex, the mounting and the humping are instinctive reactions that prepare the dog for future procreation.

Dog owner may opt to breed or not to breed the pet. Breeders would naturally breed the dog for monetary reasons. The prospect of holding cute puppies that look and behave lot like the pet would be reason enough for an owner to breed the pet. A dog owner would want to perpetuate the genes of a winner thus the dog will be bred . While some owners will specifically want to breed the pet, others would make sure that breeding is prevented especially if the dog will contribute to the number of homeless dogs that need to be put to sleep. Responsible dog owners would neuter the pet so as not to add to the number of homeless dogs. With all these reasons it would be necessary for a dog owner to know at what age the dog can be bred.

Attainment of sexual maturity is largely influenced by the size as well as the breed of the dog. Not all dogs would attain puberty at the same age. Dogs commonly reach puberty from 6 to 12 months of age.

Smaller breeds attain sexual maturity at a much younger age . A six months old small breeds would show sexual advances but large breeds have to be about a year old before they get sexually active. Unlike small breeds that are ready to mate at six months of age, large breed of dogs would be interested in mating only when it is about a year old. Dogs must not be allowed to mate before the first birthday when the sperms are already fully developed.
