Dogs make wonderful additions to the family. Some people though would think twice about taking one for a pet. Caring for a dog is a big responsibility. Similar to a baby, a dog has to be supervised to be kept out of trouble.
One of the concerns of pet parents is potty training. Dog owners should not assume that when a puppy is brought home from the breeder the pup is already trained to go potty in the right place. Housebreaking the dog should not be a problem as an owner have several techniques to choose from in training the dog. Paper training is one of the methods by which the dog can be taught to eliminate in the designated place.
Paper training is usually the option of pet owners living in high rise buildings or pet owners that do not have the luxury of staying at home all day to monitor the activities of the pet. To train the dog you have to select a room with an easy to clean floor. Use a bathroom or any room with an easy to clean floor to be the training area. While the dog is being trained, you need to put the bed, the feeding bowls as well as the dog's toys in the room. Use old newspapers to cover about of the floor area. The bed of the dog must be placed several feet away from the area covered with newspapers as dogs would not eliminate near the place where they sleep.
The untrained dog would poop and pee all over the room thus the pet must be closely monitored at least during the early part of the training. Staying inside the room and playing with the dog will be a good chance to bond with the pet and to monitor the activities of the dog at the same time. You will notice that a dog about to poop or pee will scratch the floor or turn around in circles. Take the dog at once and get him to the pile of newspapers. Praise the dog after it has done its business. Dogs want to please their owners and the praise will encourage the dog to eliminate in the same spot again. Be sure to remove only the top paper from the pile so that the smell of the dog's excrement will remain. Dogs tend to eliminate in the same spot where they can smell their excrement.
This sound so easy but actually it is not. An owner has to continuously monitor the activities of the pet before it can use the paper on its own.
